Garmin Express installs but cannot find Edge 205 device

Hi there, I have been pushed to try the new Modern interface and had to download Garmin Express but despite two attempts to install and use it, the software refuses to show that any device is connected on the new dashboard and Garmin Express cannot detect that my Garmin Edge is plugged in to the USB (says check if device plugged in to cable or similar). The Classic view works perfectly still and I just verified can still detect my Edge devices (a 500 and a 205) on USB that way and upload activities.

How long will it be before I cannot turn back to Classic and so then the Garmin website and software will become useless to me?

Also, I am getting a "Window XP is out of support with Microsoft and soon will be here too" type message when garmin Express is started. I do not intend to upgrade my machine to Vista or above and like many millions of others will not be forced into doing it. How long before support for this OS is phased out?

Not happy.

Edit: During the device search Garmin Express also pops up a message about choosing which account to Run As, which suggests a permission issue. However, I am on a personal home machine, not a corporate network, so have local administrator privileges, therefore there should not be any permission issues.
