Garmin Forerunner 310XT, Garmin Connect and Express. Can't send course to device.

I have upgraded to Garmin Express and eventually got it working but I still can't send a course to the device. I can send a training plan and get data from the 310. I have removed the device, rebooted it and reconnected but still no luck. Anyone?
  • You can't send data to your 310XT using Garmin Express. Have a look here for more information.

Thanks, don't know why I never found that after all the googling I did. Have reverted to Ant Agent and it worked fine.
  • Stupid Garmin. So I have to use Garmin Express for some devices and you cant use the Ant Agent without. Why would they have rolled out an "advanced" feature and then disable a basic functionality like downloading courses.
For as awesome as Garmin is at some things they are absolute morons when it comes to software modifications and knowing their customers and how they actually use their devices.
  • Look at the date of the last post!

You can send courses from the new so-called modern Garmin Connect using Garmin Express to the 310.

If you have the old Garmin Connect you need the old Garmin Communicator plugin and ye olde ANT Agent.

There is no mix and match twixt old and new.
  • @PHILIPSHAMBROOK: At last, a real live person who seems to know something about Garmin Connect and ANT Agent. Please help me understand what is going on and what to do. I have used FR60 since 2009, and when it died I have used a FR910XT, which also uses a USB Stick and ANT Agent to transmit data to my computer and then to upload to Garmin Connect. I then purchased an Edge 500 this year which required that I install Garmin Express. That in turn required that I uninstall ANT Agent. I assumed that Garmin Express would take over the duties of the ANT Agent. However, once I got Garmin Express installed, the Edge500 of course worked, and the Garmin Express page showed the FR910XT listed, but there was no way to get the data from the 910XT to Garmin Express because the 910XT only can transmit data via the USB stick which uses ANT agent, which was uninstalled. So I was forced to reinstall ANT Agent, which for some reason was really tricky, and for a while everything worked in parallel (Edge 500 with Garmin Express, and FR910XT with ANT Agent) until months later I was urged to upgrade to a new version of Garmin Express. I had forgotten what I had gone through, so when asked to uninstall ANT Agent, I unthinkingly complied; this got me into the situation that I had described the first time I installed Garmin Express. Support at Garmin have been useless -- they have given me contradictory advice. I managed with difficulty to reinstall ANT Agent, and have struggled on till now. Now I have recently got another invitation to upgrade to the latest version of Garmin Express, and of course I was told to uninstall ANT Agent. I immediately, at this point, quit the Garmin Express Upgrade.

Am I missing something here, and is there actually a way to transmit data from my Garmin FR910XT to Garmin Express without using ANT Agent and the USB stick? I hardly use Garmin Connect for anything else fancy -- just to record details of my workouts, really, and to map out my most frequent repeat courses. But this seems to be the most poorly thought out sequence of "improvements" that Garmin has ever done. Much obliged for any help on this. BTW I use a Mac computer, don't know if that makes any difference.
  • You always need the USB stick with the 910.

If you have the new 'modern' Garmin Connect you need Garmin Express and your USB stick to upload to Garmin Connect. If you reinstall Garmin Express it should clear out your ANT Agent files. Only install GE if you have the new Garmin Connect though. I think it's fully out there in the wild now, but you may have still have the option to switch. Mine fires up in the old so I have to switch over

You can have more than one device in Garmin Express. For a research project I've been doing I have 2 x 910XTs in GE uploading to the same account. I'm sure you'd be able to do the same with a 910 and a 500.
  • @PHILIPSHAMBROOK: Thanks so much for clarity on the subject. It never was made clear by Garmin, in the sequence of changing over Garmin Connect to the modern version, specifically that the modern Garmin Connect would act in concert with Garmin Express to take over control of the USB stick from the previous ANT Agent control. Currently I fire up my USB stick from my ANT agent icon on my Mac, and when the uploads from the 910 are done it automatically sends me into the old Garmin Connect, which makes sense now that I understand if I start from the ANT Agent, it will only end up in the version of Garmin Connect that it is compatible with, i.e. the old version, whereas I can get to the modern Garmin Connect when I navigate directly to it. I know what I need to tweak now, and that I must permanently uninstall Ant Agent and only load the new Garmin Connect. Thanks for the explanations!

    EDIT: P.S.
The above information, while it gave me the confidence to keep on trying until it worked, still did not make things unfold smoothly. I upgraded GE and killed ANT Agent, but was unable to get GE to recognise my USB stick and find my 910. I got on the GE and Mac group and tried to troubleshoot, and after a lot of effort managed to connect. For my convenience, I will append a copy of my reply from the GE and Mac thread, as my fix may help users who got stuck in the same way that I did...

    QUOTE:
"I have a related issue that is essentially the same problem. I have used my 910XT with USB stick and ANT Agent to connect via Mac to Garmin Connect successfully for over a year, and I am familiar with that process, having used the same with a previous FR60. Then this yearI bought an Edge 500, which required I install Garmin Express, which in turn required I Uninstall ANT Agent. Well, after that My USB stick didn't work; I tried various efforts to make GE connect with my 910, but really basically didn't understand the process. I then reinstalled ANT Agent and used the USB stick after that. For a while I didn't use the Edge 500, but when I finally reinstalled GE, or was it an updated that I was notified to do, then of course ANT Agent and USB stick got uninstalled. This time I managed somehow to reinstall ANT Agent (which I kept using to keep the USB stick active) and yet keep GE working to allow my Edge500 data to be uploaded, which I understand isn't supposed to be allowed, but, oh, well. I finally read up on the process and found out that when I uninstall ANT Agent, GE is supposed to find the USB stick and make it work to find data on the 910XT. So a few days ago I updated GE to the latest version at the time, ver .18, with the confidence that everything would roll out smoothly and automatically. Wrong.

I recorded a workout this morning on my 910, and then tried to connect via GE. I plugged in the USB stick, turned my 910 of and on again, made sure it was in Data Pairing mode. I opened GE, and it remembered my 910 device (from my previous unsuccessful pairing effort). I waited for ever, and nothing happened. The page also noted that it was trying to updated my 910 with the latest 910 software, unsuccessfully (this was a bogus issue, because my 910 was loaded with the latest software previously, via USB stick and ANT agent, but I guess GE couldn't know that because it wasn't connecting). The "Sync" button was also greyed out, which I guess meant that the problem was in not connecting via the USB stick. I then noticed that a new version of GE was available, ver .19. So I installed that. I repeated all the above steps, but no luck.

Finally, I selected the FR910XT from the GE list of devices and DELETED it. In the process it asked me if I also wanted to delete it from Garmin Connect, which I did not, so I indicated this decline. Once the 910XT was deleted, I ADDED NEW DEVICE, the same FR910XT that I had just deleted. It successfully added my 910, and the sync button immediately became live, and I was able to use it finally to sync and upload data from the 910 for the first time in over 6 months of trying!"
