trouble connecting via bluetooth to my phone

I'm knew to the Garmin Family my girlfriend recently purchased me a forerunner920 i love it but it can never connect to my smartphone(iphone4s) at first i thought it was maybe me being electronically inclined but then i was raving about my new watch so much we went out and got my girlfriend her own and after putting in a few runs of her own shes expierencing the same issue as well are we doing something wrong??? also on my garmin connect app from my phone i cant find her as a friend why cant we connect???
