AutoLap should work even with GC planning

I'm sure you realize this, but I'm going to point out why this does not make sense.

Since each step of the workout is considered a lap, the only case where using Auto Lap makes any sense is when the Auto Lap trigger is set to trigger at some interval (distance or time) that is less than or equal to the interval used for that step of the workout. Auto Lap doesn't really work well if you set it to trigger every 1mi and you are doing 10min run+1 minute walk repeats, or if you are at the track doing interval work. It doesn't work well because your workout interval is broken up by the Auto Lap timer (you want stats for each mile, but your mile finishes 30' before the end of the 4th lap).

I don't understand the difficulty of setting up a repeat in the workout. If you want to run 18mi, and you want the workout to notify you every mile, you add a Repeat item with a single sub-item that is a 1mi interval. This only about 3 additional clicks in the workout creator. It gives you consistent behavior regardless of how Auto Lap is configured, and it doesn't require tweaking of Auto Lap every time you switch from long intervals to long runs.

This is because its normal you have main goals and sub goals on the run. If i do 25mi with a warmup,speedsteps etc, and a 20mile session with pauses i might want to be noticed every mile but also want to take noticed AFTER the race my split time for each 5 mile including how my pulse , kadence, HRR is . It has nothing to do with my "repeat" session during the race. Its used after the race to analyse.


Today i did a simple GC 5km session with warmup ,1km run ,pause ,3km run,1km run and colling down and when i come home i have 5.3 km but cant see any information about my main goal of 5km. how did the 5km go ? . Would have been easy with a Autolap at 5km

Funny but your Livetrack gives 1km lap reports to the viewer with my above run but not to the runner (if Autolap=1km) :-) So its not that hard to make it work is it ?

MICHAELMODE, then what have you programmed? I don't see an issue if you programmed the warmup, the 1 km run, the 3 km run (you could even add it as 3 repetitions of 1 km if you wanted that) and then the 1 km cool down... All of these are supported in GC and you would see your workout per phase, i.e., what was your performance on the warmup portion of it, the run itself and the cool down...

Here's why I would love if it auto-lapped during a planned workout. I train via heart rate. My run tomorrow I want to run 50 mins in zone 2, 30 mins in zone 3 and the final 10 mins as a easy cool down. I know my km laps won't fit neatly into the different sections of my run but I would still like to know my splits. So I have two choices, I plan a workout with the broken down time above and get three lap paces, or I just have auto-lap on and move into the next zone at the lap closest to the time. Neither will give me all the information I want.

I would really love if the targets weren't a range, but the average for the lap. I never use targets now, but would if it was the lap HR or lap pace.

First, you seem to be assuming that I am a Garmin employee. I can assure you that this is not the case. Second, I have never said what you are asking for would be hard. I've just said that it would be confusing.

I don't own a Polar, but I fail to understand why people request this. If you make an interval workout, you almost certainly want the information from the intervals separated. If you didn't want it separated, you wouldn't have split the workout up into segments.

Garmin currently gathers statistics for each lap separately, and this works well for exactly that. Now, you want the watch to track each segment of the workout separately (you most likely want stats for the 3k segment separate from the others) and you want it to track the total for other parts as well (you don't want the warm-up or cool-down to be considered in your overall workout stats).

If I understand what you are wanting correctly, setting auto lap to 5km wouldn't have worked for your use case anyway since you warmed up (presumably with the device tracking your workout). Assuming a .15k warm-up and .15k cool-down, your recorded data would have been...

I don't think that is what you wanted. It seems auto lap wouldn't work well for a normal track workout either...

What auto lap distance are you going to choose that provides any useful information given that workout? It seems to me that you wouldn't want auto lap at all since any data gathered would include your rest intervals. You could stop your watch during the recovery intervals, but then you lose data about your recovery and a whole mile of the workout that you spent running.

Exactly. What you are asking for is something that should be done offline after your workout data is pulled off of the device. It has nothing to do with the workout itself and is only something you want to see when you're sitting in front of your computer later that evening.

It seems that a more generic solution would be to allow users to select 'work' intervals and display some information about them (average heart rate, average pace, average cadence) as well as contrast them (heart rate/pace/cadence for first work interval vs the last) when viewing the data offline.
