My Garmin will not recognise Distance or Speed accurately

I have had my Garmin Edge 500 for two years and it has been working fine until last week.

When I ride, the Garmin is not recording my Distance and hence turns off after 5 mins or so due to it thinking that the device is not in use.

The Speed is also not recording properly, in that when I am riding at about 25km/h, it shows a reading of around 0.3 to 5 km/h, which is not correct.

I have purchased new batteries for the receiver on the back of the frame adjacent to the back wheel and my Garmin GPS unit is 100% charged. Eveything appears to be installed correctly, as it has been for over two years. I've also uploaded all the latest software onto my Garmin.

Has anyone had this problem before and know how to fix it? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
  • I think that you can assume that if the distance reported is incorrect (or the time), then the speed reported would also be incorrect since speed is a function of distance and time. So it seems that your problem is that the distance data is bad.

The only way that the batteries in the GSC-10 (assuming this is the 'receiver' you speak of) would affect the distance reported by the 500 would be if you were riding with the GPS functionality disabled. Is this the case? If so, make sure that the wheel size is set properly in your Edge 500. Otherwise, it would seem that the problem is that the GPS functionality of the Edge 500 isn't working correctly.
