Altitude gain on edge 800 whilst cycling inaccurate

How is the altitude gain measured on the edge 800 device?..is it based on gps map records or air pressure or who knows?..after doing a ride my device may read 1400m altitude gained, but then when it is connected to garmin connect the data shows a different figure on the computer screen..eg 1190m..
