Garmin 62s NMEA Sentences via Serial

I cannot for the life of me get readable NMEA sentences out of a Garmin 62s..

I have the correct serial cable and its powering up via the cable and its 12V supply OK.

I have the serial part of the cable plugged into a Windows machine and using Putty I am opening the COM port. I get garbage from the COM Port.. which gives me some confidence I have the correct cable configuration.

I have tried all range of COM Port settings in Putty, all speeds (1200 up to 115200), odd parity, even parity, mark, space.. 7 data bits, 8 data bits.. nothing results in readable data. I was expecting it to be 4800,N,8,1 or 9600,N,8,1.. neither of these render anything but garbage.

I have the 62s configured to "NMEA In/Out" on the "Interface" setting.

My 62s is running the latest firmware (5.30).

Has anyone seen readable NMEA sentences out of the 62s on a COM Port?

Thanks.
