Garmin won't connect to MAC through USB

My Garmin Forerunner 910XT will not connect to my MAC. It doesn't get recognized either through Garmin connect or even as an sd card in the Finder window, but it appears the connection is good because it indicates it is recharging. I tried on my windows machine as well, with similar results. I have Garmin Connect installed, I have installed the communicator plug-in, I have changed the watch settings from pair disabled to pair enabled. Anyone had similar problems? Anyone know the fix?
