AMPS mount for Montana

Maybe wrong place but I can't find answer through search. Have just asked the question on the Garmin site.--- Does the AMP mount power the Montana by charging the battery or directly? I'd heard the battery was disconnected when the unit was in the mount but mine turns on and works with the unit in the AMP mount with no power to the mount. If it works both ways, I'll wire to switched power. Otherwise I'll wire to unswitched power. Also, would the unit work without the battery installed if in the AMP mount? Or, if the AMP mount power runs through the battery, would the unit work with a shot battery?
