Garmin Connect - One data source to rule them all?

Hey!

So... a couple of questions for everyone...

I am presently using both Nike+ and MapMyRun apps on my phone to track my runs. I do this because I enjoy features of both services, but they don't talk to one another to share the data. As you can imagine, this is quite taxing on the battery in my phone and I don't think it'll last through a run of 10+ miles.

I'm presently looking at purchasing a Garmin Forerunner 220 watch, and am hoping this can be my main source of data going forward. Here's what I'd like to do...

1. Run with the Forerunner 220
2. Save my workout data to Garmin Connect
3. Export and transfer the data to other locations: Nike+, Strava, MapMyRun, etc. (ideally, in some form of automated system)

So first question: Is this doable?
Second question: If yes, will the data that is transferred to these other sites appear similarly to their native tracking? IE: Maps, splits, heart rate, etc?

Any thoughts / ideas you can provide is greatly appreciated. I'm really hoping this is a viable solution, and if so... I'll be buying a watch. ;)

Thanks.
  • Yep - doable... I have mine exported to Strava & Runkeeper from GarminConnect.

There's 3 for you to take a look at and see if they'll do what you want.

I totally understand your concern. I don't trust Garmin Connect to be my main source of data, namely because as company's change their goals and plans, their previous commitments change. I've seen this happen many times. So while Garmin Connect is now free for us to use, who's to say that it'll be free years down the line? They might start charging us to view data that's more than 1 year old, etc.

I think it's better to have your main source of data be on your local hard drive. Certainly continue using Garmin Connect, but have a copy of the data on your hard drive, and maybe use your own application (e.g., rubiTrack) to run this data to as a secondary backup.
