Garmin Foretrex 101 (Help!)

Hi guys,

I recently dug out my old Foretrex 101 and seeing as its a lovely simple solid piece of kit (and I have a bike mount for it) I want to start using it again.

I picked up a 9 pin serial-USB2 converter lead, but can't for the life of me get my Laptop to pick it up. I'm running Vista (Gak! I know) but don't usually encounter any problems with hardware/peripherals etc. I get the feeling my Laptop may be recognising the converter cable, but not the device itself.

I'm willing to try anything!

Cheers!

Windows won't recognise the Foretrex as a device as such. The USB to serial converter should be detected by Windows, you can check if it is listed in device manager. It should create a virtual serial port.

Then you need some software that supports the Garmin serial protocol to connect to it. One option is Garmin Mapsource. It will let you transfer tracks, waypoints, routes.
Or you could try EasyGPS or GPSBabel, they should also work with the Foretrex.

What software are you using? Does it give any error message?

Is the USB serial adaptor listed in Device Manager? That should tell you what COM port it is using.
So you would have to set Mapsource (or other software) to use that same COM port.
