Nuvi 2517LM doesn't have any voice files.

Just bought the above model and on it's first test trip I realised that while it was showing directions correctly there were no voice prompts. Checked all the usual suspects and then realised there were no voice files actually installed on the device.
Went to download english language pack from garmin express and that keeps failing to install.

Any ideas what I can do, pretty useless having a device with no voice!

If you're on a PC try using WebUpdater instead.

Try putting your unit into mass-storage mode (vs MTP)

Garmin Mass Storage Setting and Changing it out of MTP mode....

Newer model devices default to MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) mode when connected to a computer. That hides some files on the device. Also WebUpdater may not support MTP mode (I don't have any such model so I don't know).

Mass-storage mode makes your device look like a disk drive. WebUpdater will definitely work that way.

FYI my 1490T has six English voices to choose from

    American English (Jack)
    American English (Jill)
    Australian English (Lee)
    Australian English (Karen)
    British English (Daniel)
    British English (Emily)

Now I only keep Australian English (Karen) on my unit since voice files are quite large and I don't use the others.

    I like "Karen" because

    • she has a nice Aussie accent :)
    • as a male I'm used to being given directions by a woman :)

That said I keep the other files on a SD card in case Karen & I decide to go separate ways :D
  • Try logging onto your myGarmin and see what voice files you're offered in the myDashboard tab ... that seems to offer more voice files than Webupdater/Express

Well I was only able to download one British English voice file...

I don't think anything (Garmin Express. WebUpdater or myDashboard) will offer more voices unless they're not installed (or rather the unit thinks they aren't) or there's newer version(s) available (probably why you got the British one).

The solution is to, with you unit in mass-storage mode, delete (or move to HD etc) all the files in the \Voice folder on your unit, reboot it, and then check for voices again. That should give you all the options.
  • myDashboard offers more voices for my 2508 than WebUpdater does, why I have no idea :)

Yes it does. In fact I just downloaded some "extra" ones.

That said you'll only be offered ones that you don't already have installed in the device. Like all Garmin software the

    \Garmin\GarminDevice.xml

file is checked to see what, and what version, of files are installed. If later or new ones are available they'll be listed for installation. You don't see what you already have.

The method I posted above should "fix" the GarminDevice.xml file so that all voice files are shown as available for download/installation.
  • @RORSCHACHUK: Out of curiosity, have you installed a map update on your nuvi? If so, did you use Garmin Express?

The reason I ask is that it has been reported by several users (including me) on another forum that the Garmin Express map update deleted the voice files on their nuvi.
  • Glad you got them back :)

Now would be a good time to back up all the files from your nuvi to your PC. That way you'll have them in future should anything go wrong.
