Advance Avoidances (Detours): How does it work?

I am confused on the Advanced Detour avoidances. How does the distance option work eg. .5 km, 2 km, 5 km and so on? I played around with the scenarios in GPS simulation mode and I wasn’t able to determine how the unit determines the detour? The same applies when selecting a "road or area as a pre-defined option.”
