Total mileage travelled climbing

I recently purchased a Garmin edge 500 and am really enjoying using it and find the information it provides is brilliant

My question is (apologies if this has been asked before) using garmin connect (or anything similar) is there a way of viewing the total mileage traveled climbing on a run. The edge 500 calculates the total ascent travelled in feet but i would like to see what my distance travelled is and how much of that i have travelled climbing and or descending

Cheers Andy
  • Garmin Connect does not do that, nor do any of the devices. I have to admit that I don't see how that would be useful. In all my years running and biking, I haven't thought of using a measure like this. It would also be a bit arbitrary: what do you define as a climb or a descent? A 1 percent grade? A 3 percent grade?

We'll to be honest i wasn't planning on using this function for either running or biking because as you say its not a necessary statistic. The truth is I am off skiing next week and was interested in using it to track my movement as it's something I have never done before and though the mapping would be quite interesting! I wanted a way to see how much distance I travel and then also see the distance skied therefore minus lift usage (the climbs). Obviously this wouldn't be 100% accurate.

The only other way I could think of doing it was lap at the top and bottom of each lift...
