No map data for run

I went on a recent run, 7 miles, and I can't seem to figure out why there is no map data.

Run:
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/429192212

I run here frequently enough to know it's easy to get a satellite signal and nothing was changed from any other run. Any one see something I did wrong? Any tests I can do?
  • I would think one posibility is that there wasn't any track data logged to the upload file. If your device uploads .tcx or .gpx then you can look at it with a text editor and see if there is any such data. I think it would be a <trkpte> tag, but whatever the tag is, there'll be a bunch of those tags with lat/long coordinates next to them. If your device uses a .fit you have to have the fitfilerepair tool or similar.

Why there wouldn't be any track data logged and you still got other data, I have no guess. But if you do have all the track data, then I guess it would be GC's issue.

Might help someone else if you post the activity file from the device.

I looked at your ride and it appears that your GPS was turned off (or never found satellite lock) and the accelerometer (I just learned about that little devil from Tim) in the watch took over and generated the distance based on cadence and stride length. The accelerometer works like the old footpod.

When I go for a run I snap my 310 under the windshield wiper and leave it for awhile and tie my shoes etc.
Then I check gps accuracy before I start because sometimes it takes longer than others to get a good lock.
The 620 manual does not say if it tells you the accuracy but it does say the sat bars turn green when it is good to go.

I do not know of any tests but you might do a few more stretches and wait a minute or two after the green bars appear before you start?
Also, IMHO, it helps the device get a good lock if it stays in one spot while searching for sats. Hence my reason for snapping my 310 under the wiper blade (unless I parked under a tree).

If you start running with weak or no sat lock, your 620 will think you are running inside on a treadmill or whatever and the accelerometer will take over and not keep trying to find satellites. The result is exactly what you got. Distance, Pace, Cadence and Time with no track because there are no gps coordinates.

    Don,

I think you hit the hammer on the head. I didn't realize the 620 would just stop trying to connect since I've had it start a mile or two into my previous runs on occasion. Looks like I need to go over the manual in detail. Thanks!
