I have noticed a bug on the GPS firmware that lets a user unknowingly save a waypoint that is potentially far away from the actual location.
I'm a brand new user of an ETrex 30 device, firmware version: 3.40.
I have decided to try the device when I left in vacation, here is the list of steps that reproduced the problem for me:
1. Stopped at the gas station near my house, marked a waypoint there.
2. Turned the GPS device off.
3. Drove 80 miles to a cabin.
4. Turned on the device and saved a waypoint at the cabin (I suspect without realizing it didn't have GPS lock yet, I didn't look though).
5. At a later time when trying to walk back to the cabin (using the waypoint saved at step 4) I noticed that the GPS was trying to take me back home, so upon looking more closely I noticed that the cabin waypoint was saved near the gas station (where I had my last waypoint saved before turning off the device).
I'm writing this because I think the device should not let you save waypoints without a GPS lock, or at least warn you that the waypoint isn't where you think it is in this case.
P.S. I could not find a forum for ETrex..
