Auto zoom problems!

Ok, I really have no idea where to post this on this Garmin forum. Here's the deal:

When you are traveling faster than 50mph, the GPS auto-zooms out and you look "Map detail" in order to give you a bigger picture. The problem is that side streets/country roads are considered unnecessary detail as far as Garmin is concerned...Even if you are driving on them! Yes, if you are driving on a country road over 50mph, the road will disappear from the map on the screen and it will appear that you are traveling through the middle of a field.

I have been hashing this out with Garmin support for about a week now and they are of no use. While they won't directly say that this is a flaw, they will not deny that it is but offer no expectations of resolution.

Does anyone have any suggestions for an automotive GPS (sub-$300 range) that will not auto-zoom me out of side streets?
