Uploading Garmin 110 problem

Former Member

After today's run, I connected my Garmin - like I've always done for the years I've had it - and I got the message 'One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it.' I click on this message for more information, and I get this recommendation; 'Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognize it, replace the device.'
I have tried it in all 6 USB ports on my laptop, have disconnected/reconnected the cable to my watch, and still get this message.

WTF???
My Garmin recorded my run just fine, it is taking a charge when I plug it in, it just won't upload. Do I need to get a new cable, or is the whole set up (watch and cable) destined for the trash??

Thanks for any help with this.

    Hello MJ,

Try reloading the USB drivers from here.
    http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=591

Be sure to read the Notes and upgrade NET Framework and Windows Media Player 11.

Also download and run Webupdater to make sure your 110 has the latest software.

The Forerunner 110 works as a USB mass storage device, so doesn't need any extra drivers.
It is a good idea to update the software on the watch, but that won't be possible if you can't connect it to a computer.

Try moving the clip on the cable a bit, sometimes it can be tricky to get it to clip onto the watch. And make sure the contacts on the watch are clean. Or try plugging it into another computer.

    You could also try a reset on the Forerunner. Instructions from here: http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={0439fb90-a761-11e0-d01c-000000000000}
    To perform the master reset:
    • Power off watch (press and hold Light, Yes on prompt)
    • Press and hold Start/Stop and Lap/Reset
    • Press and hold Light (three buttons should now be pressed in)
    • After first beep, release Start/Stop
    • After second beep, release Lap/Reset
    • Release Light
