Garmin 60csx V's Delorme PN-60w

I'm not sure I'm in the right part of the forum but I just wanted to add that I have both the Garmin 60csx and the Delorme PN-60w. My preferred GPS will always be the Garmin. My 60csx is battered beyond belief, the antenna fell apart, the screen is badly cracked and it's generally so scuffed it looks worthless but I love it. There are numerous reasons, below are a few, I should point out that I have each manufacturers U.S Topo mapping software.

* Hit Find Points of Interest with the Garmin and it finds all manner of incredible things, sometimes I wonder if they should be on a GPS at all, it will find for instance sacred Navajo ruins. The Delorme is quite frankly useless.

* I once did a trail, I flew in from abroad and turned both GPS's on at the same time, the Garmin found my location much much faster than the Delorme.

* Battery life, I am pretty damned sure that the Garmin lasts longer on a pair of lithium AA's. Not certain, I'm tempted to buy a pack and test it out but that would be a bit of a waste of resources.

So I just wonder has anyone a view on this.

P.S. Hands down I recommend the Garmin 60csx to my friends every time.

Not sure what "views" you're looking for but here's my 2c.

My first GPS was a Delorme Tripmate GPS which I bought in 1997. It came with Delorme Street Atlas USA (v4 I think). The Tripmate only worked with a PC (laptop) and it's only interface was serial (RS-232).

I used the Tripmate until I purchased my first Garmin unit, a eTrex Legend, in 2000/1. I went through several versions of Delorme Street Atlas USA.

The Tripmate was very slow at acquiring satellites. It could take 5-10 mins to get a 3D fix. The Delorme Street Atlas USA maps were ok.

I have no idea about newer Delorme products but back in the late 90's and early 00's they were "poor man's" GPS'es IMO.

I guess my view is that the Garmin is better hands down, I just wonder if anyone has a view on battery life comparisons as my Delorme seems to chew through lithium AA's.
  • This forum is mainly Garmin Fitness devices. You'd probably get more responses over here -> http://forums.gpsreview.net/

Don't know why Garmin only has this "Into Sports" forum and not an "On the Trail", "On the Road" or others, but they don't.
