AllVehicles.zip

Firstly: I know this post doesn't belong here :)

I'm hoping someone can confirm (or deny) something for me.

Garmin makes a package containing Vehicle symbols for nuvi's available at

http://www8.garmin.com/vehicles/m/srf/allVehicles.zip

Now I have downloaded that file on 3 different PC's using multiple browsers and the file I get is always 25,858,543 bytes. When I try and extract the files I get errors using WinZip and 7-Zip.

I think the ZIP file is corrupt (truncated). I emailed Garmin's webmaster to let them know but they swear there's nothing wrong with the file.

PS: I have all the Vehicle files. I don't need to know how to get or install them. I'm just trying to establish if the problem is at my end (???) or if the file on Garmin's server(s) is corrupt.

    Actually, make that 140 (I have) vs 136 (Garmin).

    The default "unzip" utility that comes with OS X. I did some more tests; the console unzip utility has a problem with the file, showing the same amount of errors as in your case.
    Also another program "The Unarchiver" isn't able to extract the file completely either.

    Thanks. Now I know the issue. Garmin used some ZIP method that some programs don't support. The file itself (on their servers) is the same.

    Now I can sleep at night :D

    I think Garmin uses 7-zip but those archives should have a .7z extension not .zip.

    7-zip can produce zip files just as well. 7z files need another decompression algorithm that isn't widely supported.

    Yeah I know 7-zip supports the ZIP format. However not all ZIP programs support 7-zip's proprietary compression method(s). If one posts a ZIP file it should be able to be decompressed using commonly used unzippers (such as Winzip). If its 7-zip proprietary it should have a .7z extension not .zip.

    Most Garmin installer packages can be decompressed using 7-zip but I know Winzip can't.

    unless there is a message that says a specific archive utility is needed, then the utilities native to Windows and Mac OS's should be able to unpack the file.

    But yet I get the same errors with windows extraction utility as you initially posted. Haven't tried on my Mac yet.

    edit....Not trying to sound like I'm riding a high horse. I frequently get a little wordy though and forget to write the real intent of my post which was to say that I feel it's likely someone did save this using a special compression algorithim and they (Garmin) has not realized it yet. Although it's possible as someone said that there's a bad file out on akamai's server farm and some of us hit it and others don't, but I feel it's more likely the wrong compression format.
