Problem Routing with Oregon 450t

We just purchased the Oregon 450t. It came with the Topo 100K map. My husband is trying to do a very basic route. Profile set to Hiking, Lock on Roads is Off. He picks a point about 4 miles from our house, set a Waypoint, and says Go, we choose Minimize Time, and we get the error: Route Calculation Error. Maps do not have routable roads in this area. Now I understand that the Topo 100K is a non-routable map, but is it not possible to have the unit just come up with a direct route for hiking?

Next issue is that when we try to do a Where to?, Address, I type in Ohio and it says No Results Found. Try adjusting search parameters. The Topo 100K is the map that is enabled. So I am trying to find a local town about 25 miles from here and it appears that the unit doesn't even recognize Ohio. Is there something wrong with the GPS or are we missing something?

Next, current location is saved as Home, he creates a Waypoint anywhere and try to Go, it gives the same error. What we really want is to use for hiking. How do we connect waypoints? We don't need roads, just a hiking route.

Just trying to determine if this is how the unit functions or if the unit is bad. This is a refurbished unit. Thanks for any insight you can provide.

The Garmin 100K topo's (on DVD or preloaded on a device) aren't routable. I have an Oregon 450 (no preloaded maps) and use some Garmin 24K topo's (which have routable roads & trails) on it.

To create point-to-point routes you have to set the "Activity" in Setup -> Routing to "Direct Routing".

BTW this may be of assistance.

We could not find this in the manual...

I initially checked the manual and then my 450 and saw the manual was inaccurate. I'm not sure if something changed in one of the many firmware updates or not as I haven't ever used point-to-point routing. That won't work on the (mountainous) trails around here.

Yes, somewhere along the line the Oregon x50 has gotten new activity profiles for routing; the manual wasn't updated and still mentions guidance method & transportation method.
Back then you would select "Off Road" for direct routes, whereas the current activity "ATV/Off Road Driving" requires routeable roads. The equivalent of the old "Off Road" is "Direct Routing", just as you've written in your previous post.
