Garmin Monterra compass calibration problem

I'm well aware of the compass problems on the new Monterra: jitter and drift and the need for frequent calibration. Does anyone else have the problem where it won't calibrate at all? During calibration I rotate the Monterra in the indicated direction, but nothing happens. It never goes to the next screen where it tells you to rotate in the next direction.
  • Mine does the same thing.
  • Well, I found out that if you just start rotating it in the next direction, it does seem to continue on with the calibration. However, the calibration doesn't last; it still drifts slowly off and jitters constantly. I hope this isnt a hardware problem and can be fixed with a firmware/app update. Garmin support isn't much help. All they do is give me instructions on how to calibrate, which we know doesn't work.
  • Y'all might do better posting at -> http://forums.gpsreview.net/

    This forum is pretty much exclusively set up for Garmin's fitness devices. Why? I don't know. But I always get good answers for my other questions at the forum above.

    Other than that, You probably should call Garmin support, as this is only a user forum, so garmin doesn't have to take any notice of your issue.
  • Thanks, I will do that. I'm afraid I'm at the end of my patience with the Monterra. It's hard to understand how such a buggy piece of hardware/software got released to market in it's current state.

    If you do the first rotation like the pic shows with the unit like it would be mount on a wall and rotate clockwise. Ref look at the shadow below the unit in the pic
  • This information also available at the Monterra wiki.
  • Is garmin working on this or are we supposed to return all of our units back fir a refund
  • I don't know for all other users, but for my part, I am definitly returning this device, Garmin should at least update a blog or something on what is happening with all the problems with this device.

    There is certainly a moderator looking at the thread of this forum, please take a moment to inform us on upcoming fix and date, that way you might help keep some long term customers like me who are definitly looking at competition devices.
  • moderaters are not garmin employees AFAIK, and likely don't have any more means to send info to Garmin than is available to us. Mods are just users that have been around the forum for a while and volunteered their service to help oversee that post are made in compliance with the forum rules and guidelines. That and spam actually takes quite a bit of manpower.

    If you have an issue and didn't contact Garmin Support, then you should. As this is a user forum, a complaint or problem reported here is not going to get as much notice from Garmin as using their support system will, where every issue can be cataloged and presumably be tallied by the bean counters.
  • I have learned if you download the geocache app and use the compass in the app it works pretty good. But this means you have to Wi-Fi hotspot to your phone so you can geocache just about any where
