Calorie differences between Strava & Garmin Connect

I went out for a run today with my Garmin 610 and am confused about something. I uploaded the run to both Garmin Connect and Strava. Both sites report near identical data for distance, time, cadence, pace, HR, etc... The only difference is Garmin Connect says the run burned 467 calories and Strava is reporting 654 calories. I know there's going to be a little difference between sites but I assumed since I was using both a heart rate strap and a foot pod for cadence they'd be closer than that. Both sites have the same height, weight info for me so I'm not sure what could be causing the discrepancy. Anyone have any ideas and/or suggestions on how to figure out which is more accurate?

I have the same issues when running - Strava reckons I burn more - however when I am cycling it is the other way aroun! No idea why...
  • There is no single accepted way to calculate calories, and in fact, it's a pretty difficult thing to do, especially when accounting for human variations in weight, pace, metabolism, and other variable such as ambient temperature and humidity, elevation gain or loss, and so on. Garmin and Strava use different algorithms, but both are estimates only.

As mentioned by DW152, Calorie burn is calculated differently by different sites. On Strava you need to ensure you have the type of activity correctly idenified. I don't know if Strava takes into account your HR data. But likely your Garmin device if made for HR does. But Garmin also uses different algorithms among them. So even two different garmin devices may give you different results.

Use the number that benefits you most. If you are trying to lose weight, use the lower burn. If you need to a add muscle/weight use the higher burn.

I think that is the major difference, in that Garmin uses the HR information to calculate calories. I have noticed that with Garmin, if I use my HR monitor, the calories burnt are a lot lower than without, whereas with Strava, they are the same.
