Garmin Connect iOS / iPhone App Issues and Crashes

There have been many report of issues with the latest version of the iOS / iPhone Garmin Connect App (v1.2.x).
(Note before the version 1.2 upgrade all worked well!!)

Since the version 1.2 upgrade people are experiencing:

(1) App Crashes Downloading Activities. When App is restarted any already downloaded activities are wiped and it starts downloading them all again - this is hitting people's download allowance and must be stressing Garmin's servers!! This is very frustrating because it means a long wait before you can download any new activities from the Garmin 510.
(2) Live track stops working most of the time.

Anyway as I am an iOS developer I have access to the crash logs so decided to dig a bit further to see what is happening for the App crashes. When the App crashes the following crash logs are produced:

Basically what that is telling me is the ConnectMobile app (assume that is the Garmin Connect App - nothing else was running at time of crash) - is using far too much memory and iOS says enough and kills it. 165418 x 4k blocks - THAT IS OVER 600mb in use by App!! So basically there is a massive memory leak in the app that needs fixing - soon please!

Happy to assist the Garmin developers or test any beta versions ... because I would like my Garmin 510 to work like it used to asap.
  • Garmin has updated the iOS app 3 times since this was first reported and it has yet to be fixed.

My live track doesn't work now on iPhone 4S with garmin 810 2.8

Not sure if since app upgrade to v3 or device to v 2.8 as both in last few weeks.

I start live track, it sends the email, and phone is already connected. After ride says live track ended, so I don't know what cuts doing on my ride, nothing it seems

Another test today and LiveTrack working ok with iPhone 5 and EDGE 510 (v2.80), however have to do the following first ..

    (1) Start the Garmin Connect App on the iPhone 5
    (2) Wait a long time for it to try and refresh activities, after about 5 minutes it will crash and exit
    (3) Start the Garmin Connect App again and activities will have been wiped, wait another 5 minutes for them to load again, this time it won't crash.
    (4) Leave Garmin Connect App in foreground and switch on the EDGE which will now connect
    (5) Start Live Track in the App
    (6) Start Activity on Edge
    (7) Lock phone while Garmin Connect App is still in foreground

I'm seeing the same Garmin Connect Mobile app crashes, with the same unbelievably-high memory usage that's documented as clear as day in the iOS crash logs. I didn't see this forum topic before posting this one:

    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?69085-Garmin-Connect-Mobile-(iOS)-crash-during-LiveTracking-with-ENORMOUS-memory-usage

I also send it directly to Garmin tech support, but given how long this appears to have been an issue, I'm no longer hopeful that they'll fix it.

    Super-frustrating.
  • HOMBREQUESO, If more people would tell garmin support like you did, instead of just coming to a user forum and complaining to the wrong people, then maybe something would be done.

I don't know, VOICERESPONSE — can you find anywhere on the forums here that obviously state that they're user-to-user only and not intended for official Garmin response? This isn't my first rodeo, so I know to expect that, but for the average user, why WOULDN'T they expect that Garmin would take note of reports of major bugs on these forums (especially when there are multiple posts about them) and act on them?

(And note that my hunting turned up this post, which explicitly states that the forums ARE a valid way to submit official reports to Garmin. So I'd actually push back about these posts being complaints "to the wrong people" — maybe Garmin is demonstrating that they don't respond to them in any meaningful way, but their own words say they *should* be responding to them...)
  • I'll always believe that contacting the company as an individual will always mean more than just posting in a forum whether the Company the forum represents participates or not. Though it may not have started out as a user forum, you can look in Garmin Connect subforums "announcements", "scheduled down time" and "known issues and solutions" The fact that there are very few post since 2009 lends some credence to my position that Garmin doesn't view their participation in this forum as necessary as when it was started.

You do see some garmin types in here when certain new products are introduced, like the vector. But they will soon leave it up to the users as they get experience with the product.
  • It has been over 168 days since this was first reported and 3 app updates since and still no fix for this.

    Ridiculous.
  • I get these problems aswell...

I don't have a lot of workouts on garmin so downloading them all doesn't take that much time. That doesn't stop the app from crashing thou. Both during rides with LiveTrack and rides without (still want it to autoupload activity and download weather).
It also crashes in between rides so it has to be restarted before a new ride.

I have a brand new Garmin EDGE 810 (2.80), a freashly installed app (1.3) and a pretty new iPhone 5s.

I guess it's still better than hardware errors :)

Its disappointing that the app doesn't work. Part of the reason I wanted the 620 was due to the bluetooth upload to GC.

I guess there's no word on the next update?
