Garmin Connect iOS / iPhone App Issues and Crashes

There have been many report of issues with the latest version of the iOS / iPhone Garmin Connect App (v1.2.x).
(Note before the version 1.2 upgrade all worked well!!)

Since the version 1.2 upgrade people are experiencing:

(1) App Crashes Downloading Activities. When App is restarted any already downloaded activities are wiped and it starts downloading them all again - this is hitting people's download allowance and must be stressing Garmin's servers!! This is very frustrating because it means a long wait before you can download any new activities from the Garmin 510.
(2) Live track stops working most of the time.

Anyway as I am an iOS developer I have access to the crash logs so decided to dig a bit further to see what is happening for the App crashes. When the App crashes the following crash logs are produced:

Basically what that is telling me is the ConnectMobile app (assume that is the Garmin Connect App - nothing else was running at time of crash) - is using far too much memory and iOS says enough and kills it. 165418 x 4k blocks - THAT IS OVER 600mb in use by App!! So basically there is a massive memory leak in the app that needs fixing - soon please!

Happy to assist the Garmin developers or test any beta versions ... because I would like my Garmin 510 to work like it used to asap.
  • Version 1.3 is here !!!

Well what do you know, version 1.3 is now available on Apple App Store.

Very quick test tonight (not exhaustive by any means!)

    - No crashes, items downloaded and refreshed properly - plus Sending new activities to Garmin Connect / edits works without waiting for downloads
    - Live Track seems to be working again - well it did for a quick walk around the block

Can't wait to try on a proper bike ride, if the rain ever stops in UK .... I will report back.

    So fingers crossed eh :)

STILL NOT GOOD - AFTER FURTHER TESTING ISSUES ARE STILL THERE SEE POSTS BELOW
  • Did my 3.1 mile commute into work and finally worked again. I didn't use livetrack and no sensors on my commute bike, but at least it uploaded the second I got to work and didn't take forever. Promising.

  • Still Issues in v1.3 !!!!!

Well 1.3 seems to be an improvement because uploads of new Bluetoothed Activities from Edge 510 / 810 are not held up by the sync of existing activities back from Garmin Connect to the iPhone - this is essential because of the continuing issue described below.

I still need to test LiveTrack properly so watch this space.

    Activity Load Woes continue ...

Had a crash again tonight when App was refreshing / loading activities already downloaded from Garmin Connect.

In summary it appears that the App will download 12 months of activities from Garmin Connect to the iPhone on first run of the App and store these on the iPhone for offline viewing - this understandably takes some time. If you open the App again after a day or two it will no longer be in sleep mode and will try and refresh the activities (same as if you manually refresh by 'pull to refresh'). This is trying to maintain sync between what is stored locally on your phone and the latest state of play of Garmin Connect, i.e. looking for changes in Garmin Connect and new Activities that need to be copied to phone. Now for some reason this will also take a significant time - 30 - 60 seconds on a fast WLAN connection. This used to crash regularly on v1.2 because of a memory leak, this appears to be fixed, but still crashes occasionally from another unhandled coding error - see crash log below! The consequence of a crash is the local store gets wiped and app has to start downloading all over again.

Now the frustrating thing is that this was not an issue back in version 1, and if you try the Garmin Fit app, which also loads and stores activities on the phone - this works without issues. Only a second or two to refresh local activities once downloaded.

  • Crashed again

Did my 3.1 mile commute into work and finally worked again. I didn't use livetrack and no sensors on my commute bike, but at least it uploaded the second I got to work and didn't take forever. Promising.
Turned on iPhone app and it crashed again!!! Had to reload all the data before my ride. At least it did upload the data relatively fast so something works better. Did turn on Livetrack, but don't know if my wife was following me or not.

crashing here too... all activities wiped twice... autoupload taking forever (2 days ansd still waiting)...... i dont think they fixed anything... they just added the 220/620 support
  • My app continues to crash pretty much every time (I have a lot of activities). This app is such a POS which is a shame because my Garmin 510 hardware has been great and my experience with support when I had to replace the hardware was also awesome. It's a real shame that the software component of this system is so poorly managed while the hardware and support are so good.

Makes it really hard to recommend Garmin to folks without the caveat of "don't expect the phone software to work". :(
  • Another day another crash

I went for a Sunday cycle, switched on the Edge 510 and then fired up the Garmin Connect App on the iPhone - it started refreshing/loading activities again. Started the Live Track on the phone and off I went. A few minutes into ride the message "Phone Disconnected" flashed up on the Edge 510 display ... I swore a few times and carried on.

When I got back I discovered what had happened. The Garmin Connect App was still refreshing/loading activities even after I had started the ride (it takes a number of minutes ... why I don't know) ... during that refresh it had one of it's regular crashes which also killed the live track by disconnecting from Edge. Crash log at bottom if this post.

    Here is the live track:

So I loaded the Garmin Connect App again, and all my activities had been wiped after the App crash, so it had to download all 12 months again, look at the following ... over 4 minute wait on fast WLAN connection before I can upload my new ride!

For reference I also have a support call logged, where they have acknowledged there are issues but they have been improved in v1.3 and only now affect power users ... i have disputed this claim and await their response.

In my opinion most of these issues relate to the fact that the Garmin Connect App is trying to maintain sync of 12 months of activities ... I am sure if you only had a few activities in your history you probably would not see these issues.

    So questions ..

    (1) Why try and maintain sync of 12 months of activities? - make this configurable, 1 month of history is probably more than enough for me.
    (2) What is wrong with your sync code - is it really that difficult to maintain sync of activities without the extended delays and crashes?
    (3) Are you really testing the scenarios where someone has lots of activities in their history?

I received a new Android work phone today and tested the Garmin Connect app on it. I haven't added my Edge 810 to it and don't intend too but it's interesting to note that the Activites sync quickly and they don't appear to be causing any crash.

Just fired up Garmin Connect on iphone 5S and Activities taking forever to sync and then app crashed and closed. How can the app developers get this stuff so wrong?

    Crashing all the time..

    Hi,
I have also been having some "nice" issues since the last upgrade to v1.3 (using an Edge 510 with v2.80):
    - The app crashes after 10 minutes of using livetrack, and picks up where it was left once it is restarted
    - The activities are stuck uploading to Garmin Connect
    - Even after closing the Garmin app, the location service is on, and runs the iphone battery down in a couple of hours.
I need to keep deactivating the location service for the Garmin app, which is a bit boring. I have also tried to completely remove the app, including from iCloud, but the issue remains.

I know the first 2 issues are all over this forum, but for this last one, if anyone has any idea, please help..
