Nuvi 2555LMT does not adhere to BaseCamp route?

I recently replaced my Street Pilot 2720 with this unit and of course there are differences in the way it behaves that I am still trying to get a handle on. One that became obvious recently is that it does not seem to adhere to routes as I see them in BaseCamp, but will recalculate the route you have downloaded and perhaps take you on a different path - is that correct?

This is really an issue because my "intent" is to use BaseCamp to define a route that I feel is safe for my 40-foot motorhome pulling a "toad." On my recent trip, though I had not memorized the route I thought I had programmed, I was surprised when it told me to turn on a road that seemed wholly inappropriate for me.

So, I had to think fast, decide to blow past that turn, then zoom and scroll the map to confirm that if I kept going I would reach the next town where I could pick up another suitable road - and the one that was indicated in BaseCamp. It even tried to get me to go down another side road that I declined.

Is there something I can do to make it take me down the route exactly as I see it in BaseCamp? Otherwise, it is not very useful as a travel planning tool, which I thought it was. Ends up being kinda dangerous for me as well.

Strange. Having said I'd never do it as I was very happy with my 1490, I went ahead recently and got a 2508. Having heard horror stories about trip planner I was pleasantly surprised. My 2508 not only seems to adhere to Basecamp routes but also retains points sent as 'shaping' or 'do not alert' points.

If you 2555 doesn't then check you're using the same map both on the GPS and in Basecamp, and that avoidances and routing options are set to the same.

Hi, thanks for the quick response. I am of course previously a MapSource user and just getting used to BaseCamp. I see now that I need to pay more attention to the "Activity Profiles" and make sure I am using my RV profile in BaseCamp and will check settings in the Nuvi.

Hi - another question. How do you make the "shaping points?" I don't see any documentation on that. I did find a post talking about it on Mac, but I have Win7. Is it available there? I have been creating waypoints to force routing a certain way.

In Basecamp open the route properties (double click the route), then right click any waypoint you want as a shaping point and select 'Do not alert on arrival'.

Thanks, I was just coming back to report that I had figured it out. So I do still create waypoints, but AFTER they are added to a route I can make it a shaping point. Will give that a try.

Just a shame that you can't make a point a shaping point on the GPS itself as clearly it can cope with them. I've suggested to Garmin that this be introduced in a future software update.

One more related question here. As I mentioned, I have now discovered the "Activity Profiles" and set one up for "RV". When I set a route in BaseCamp to use the RV profile, it does change the route - which is good. Thing is, over on the 2555, it only has two "transportation modes" - Automobile and Pedestrian. Makes me wonder if the 2555 is aware of the activity profile in BaseCamp and will route accordingly.
UPDATE

I did a test and it appears that the 2555 DOES NOT understand that the route downloaded from BaseCamp was made with my RV activity profile. It still changed the routing to what would have been the "Driving" profile in BaseCamp. If this is indeed a limitation, it is really sad.

Looking more closely, the avoidance options between BaseCamp and the 2555 are not even the same. On the Nuvi 2555, my avoidance options are:

* U-Turns
* Highways
* Tolls and Fees
* Traffic
* Ferries
* Carpool Lanes
* Unpaved Roads

In BaseCamp, it has more complex "road type" avoidances that must be making the difference:

* Interstates
* State Highways
* Major Highways
* Residential Roads
* Unpaved Roads

It has "feature type" avoidances that include:

* Toll Roads
* Carpool Lanes
* Ferries
* Date and Time Closures
* U-Turns
* Climbing Paths
* Cable Cars
* Roundabouts
* Narrow Trails

So, it looks like I will never be able to have the Nuvi calculate a route in the same way as BaseCamp. Major pain. It looks like I will have to toggle my routes in BaseCamp between my RV profile and Driving profile, hope to catch the differences and insert waypoints to force BaseCamp to route the Driving profile the same way it would the RV profile. What a pain.

Well you probably would have been better off with something like this http://sites.garmin.com/rv/ rather than a nuvi. The issue really is you have a GPS optimized for normal road use and you're trying to make it work for your RV.

What I'd do in your situation is create the route in Basecamp using the RV profile, then create a duplicate (right click the route and select duplicate). Switch the profile on that to automobile and you can then easily compare the two routes on the map, it should be obvious where they differ enabling you to insert any viapoints necessary to make the routes match. Easier than trying to toggle the profiles on one route :)

In all of this try to ensure Basecamp and your nuvi settings match as closely as possible. As you've noted, there are more options within Basecamp, this is because it's designed to work with handhelds and cycling GPS as well as (now) road use for all sorts of users. You need to pick the ones that match most closely those on your GPS.
