Oregon 550t internal memory issue

My Oregon 550t recently stopped showing the default maps, recording tracks, etc. Carried out a master reset. When I now connect the device to a Windows PC it records only 400MB free space, but there are no files other than a few empty folders and the most recent tracks. The original maps are not present, but there is no space to copy the original maps back onto the device from a backup. I have run a chkdsk which says everything is normal, with 3.477GB of data in 255 files, with 441MB Free. This suggests the map .img files are present but neither Windows explorer or the Oregon can see these map files.

Anyone seen this before or know of a solution?
  • Check setup>map>map information, her u see the loaded maps. U need to check the box in front of the map You like to use.
  • There is no hidden folder with the name .system on an Oregon; the maps are stored in the folder Garmin (as with every outdoor device; the hidden .system folder is used only on nüvi's and the zumo 2x0/3x0)
  • I was correcting my post, indeed no hidden folders and files on the Oregon 550.
thanks for clearing up javawa. Maps are always in the garmin folder.
  • As already stated the maps are in the \Garmin folder on a Oregon 550.

The following files relate to maps.

    gmapbmap.img (BaseMap)
    gmapprom.img (Preloaded Topo maps)
gmapprom.gma (unlock code for gmapprom.img)--not sure if this is present on a 550.
  • If you have a full backup of your 550 and feel comfortable doing this I'd

    1) Copy any .gpx files in \Garmin\GPX and below. These contain waypoints/routes/tracks.

    2) With your 550 connected to a PC reformat it (FAT32 filesystem). That'll wipe everything on it.

    3) Copy all the files from your backup to the 550 drive. That'll take some time.

    4) Copy the GPX files back.

    5) Disconnect and reboot the 550.

PS: If you're not already running the latest firmware (6.40) I update it after doing the above.
