Garmin Communicator or Garmin Express

What's the deal with the Communicator and Express for connecting the GPS to Garmin? Do I need both of them? I can use Garmin Express and it has, although a bit confusing, updates, and other uses to keep the GPS up to date. However, if I go into MyGarmin.com and check about updates and other abilities, like connecting my GPS so I can check about updates, it says I must have the Communicator Plugin installed on my computer. If this is true, then what's with Garmin Express? Surely I don't need both.

Another question I have is Garmin's method to update maps. If I try and update their latest map to my GPS, they are very adamant about not aborting the update, not disconnecting the GPS from the computer, etc., etc. while the update is in progress. Yet their HUGE map update file being in the large gByte size even on a fast network can take hours to download. Since many web service providers aren't that reliable, how in the world can one expect this file to make it on one try? Case in point, I was about half way through the update and lost my network connection. Now the GPS doesn't route properly because apparently some of the data is unavailable. All I can do is try again, and probably again after that. Isn't there a better way for Garmin to provide these updates? For example, can't they just send the changes to a map rather then the entire map base?

Anyway, venting my frustration. Hope someone, in particular Garmin can respond and answer my questions.

It looks like I chose the wrong section to post this basic question in. Can the administrator please move this to the proper section for this subject???
  • This is how I have it in my head, which may or may not be right.....

Garmin Communicator is a plugin to your web browser that enable the Garmin websites to exchange information from your computer and/or device.

Garmin usb drivers (which you didn't mention) enable certain Garmin devices to be seen by your computer.

Garmin Express is an application on your computer, its primary purpose is to update firmware and maps on most Garmin devices. It's likely that it utilizes both Garmin communicator and maybe the Garmin USB drivers to accomplish it's mission.

Garmin Express is one of the newer update products Garmin recently introduced. Many still prefer to use the Garmin WebUpdater for map updates.

I share your frustration on the map update times. I'd much rather be able to download the update via a conventional download process, and then later at my own time be able to install it to the device without having to be on the internet. However for me the mapupdates usually finish in half or less the time they initially show they will take.
  • Think you mean MapUpdater ... WebUpdater updates software.

Yeah, I was fumbling for that when composing my post. I should have taken time to verify.
  • So, what is the answer? Do you still need the communicator plugin?
  • No, you don't need the communicator plugin. Use WebUpdater or MapUpdater depending on whether you are updating FW/SW or maps.
Avoid Garmin Express if at all possible, based on the adverse reports. (Garmin releasing new software that has been inadequately tested? Surely not.)

You missed one thing. Late last year Garmin announced that it was abandoning Communicator Plugin. Of course, they then just recently put out an update for it, so I don't know whether they've changed their minds or are just releasing the final changes they made to it. Garmin Connect Modern does not use Communicator Plugin as far as I've been able to see. The "Manual Upload" that's still available is just that, and doesn't use Communicator Plugin.
  • Garmin Express brings together the various pieces of software that were required before into one package. Yes there are problems. Just like any software Garmin have no control on how it is used or installed or interacts with the numerous configurations out there. What I can say is that it works on the 2 Macs we have with 2 910XTs and a GPSMap 62S.

Of course, without Garmin Communicator, life has been complicated for some 3rd party connections to Garmin Connect.
