Where have my Garmin Connect Maps gone?

Hi,

Happily using Garmin Connect along with my Edge 800 to record bike rides and everything was hunky dory. Now I am using a Turbo Trainer and manually uplading rides to Garmin Connect (TCX files), my Connect Dashboard seems to 'freeze' when trying to load the latest ride map (which happens to be one of my indoor rides without a map). I understand that, because there is no map (I am on the turbo), this may happen. However, when I click onto a 'Recent Activity' that did involve going outside, nothing happens. Additionally, when I click on the 'Analyse Activities' tab and select an outside ride, all the data comes up, except the map, which just appears as an empty box with the +, -, Bing, Map and Map layers icons. When I go to the Player tab, the map of the ride appears.

What is happening???
  • It sounds to me like there are three things going on:
    1) You're having trouble uploading your most recent activity.
    2) You can't view the map on you Edge for your most recent outdoor activity, which occurred sometime in the past.
    3) You cannot see chart data for an activity in Garmin Connect.

Freezing while uploading seems to happen a lot. There are loads of threads from people experiencing the same problem. First, I would verify that you have the latest version of the Garmin Communicator browser plug-in and USB drivers. Second, (if not using ANT+ for wireless transfer) I would ensure that the contacts on your Edge and the USB are clean. I would also try uploading to another web site (e.g. strava.com, endomondo.com, mapmyride.com, etc.). If it works on another site and not GC, then the problem is with the site. In this case, you should clear the browser cache, restart the browser and try uploading again.

If the Edge works like many other Garmin devices, as the device fills up with newer activities, it begins to overwrite the GPS data for the oldest activities. It may be that the data from your newer activities exceeded the activity storage capacity of the unit and wiped out the map for that last outdoor activity. On GC, I have had problems with chart data not showing up. When the map does not appear, I check the Laps checkbox and it shows up. When the HR, Pace, Elevation or Cadence data doesn't appear, I check the Average checkbox.

Let us know how things progress.

Thanks for the response. The issue appears to have come about via some Windows Explorer Security updates that happen automatically on my computer. The work around is to switch off the 'Enable Protected Mode' for Garmin associated addresses.

My maps are now visible on the Recent Activity page when I highlight them and also when a select a specific activity, the map appears on the summary page.

Garmin were pretty quick to come back with a solution to my problem - so 'Chapeau' to Kyle on the Customer Care - Fitness Team.
