Default Course Speed

I have started using the courses function to plan my rides. However, the speed defaults to 9.7kph. Is this normal?

I don't cycle at 9.7kph, not sure where this figure is coming from. I would expect a site like this to use an adjusted Naismith or similar to estimate a time. e.g. I cycle faster on a flat route than a hilly route, etc.

Thanks.

Anyone got any hints on this? Thanks.
  • Are you talking about creating courses in Garmin Connect? If so, there is a box to the right of the map where you can enter the average speed you want to use. But there are no provisions for varying the speed on different parts of the course AFAIK.

Thanks. That's pretty poor. Most routing apps know that you cycle more slowly uphill than flat/downhill and adjust accordingly. 9.7kph is a bit of a joke.

Still can't quite believe this is right.

    Who cycles at just 9.7kph.

I know of no other mapping software that doesn't predict a time for a ride based upon a more realistic value (or taking into account the route).
