I am using a Garmin Forrunner 305 for many years.
I am a Linux user for many many years.
But Garmin ignores Linux. So, software's Linux compatibility will be part of my choice for my next GPS.
I afraid it won't be Garmin...
Most new Garmins work as USB mass storage devices.
So they work fine with Windows, Linux, Mac OS, Android etc. Just plug it in, and it will appear as a disk drive, then you can copy files on or off. No drivers or special software required.
There is a variety of GPS software for Linux which can work with Garmin devices, depends on just what you want to do.
I use a Forerunner 305 and have used PyTrainer in Ubuntu to offload and view activities. The SF URL is http://sourceforge.net/projects/pytrainer/. It's a rather good application and is still under active development. When I had a Forerunner 110, I would manually upload the files from the wrist unit to GC.
