Dakota 10 - Insufficient Space

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. I didn't turn up my scenario on a search, and I really feel like I'm overlooking something.

I have a brand new Dakota 10 that has no maps associated with it. Tonight I purchased the TOPO US 100k map and tried to install it to the device. Of course there is not enough space on the Dakota and I cannot continue. I did check and the Dakota 10 is listed as compatible with the downloadable version. Since the device has no associated maps on MyGarmin GarminExpress, Webupdate and GarminMapUpdater all show as no maps available for the device. Also, I cannot get a product key for the map. At this point I feel like I'm stuck until I can get though to support on Monday.I'm very frustrated with this process, and near to the point of just calling it quits with the Dakota and returning it. At least an Etrex 20 can have an SD card added.

Can anyone tell me how to get the maps associated with the device?

Well, I got the map downloaded to an SD card, but now I get an error that it doesn't contain data when I try to send it to my device. Any ideas?

Thanks for the response. According to some of what I'm reading over there the maps that I've now downloaded are useless to me. They say you can't split up the downloadable maps? It makes no sense that Garmin would say this map is compatible with my device.
  • Garmin in my experience is pretty good at saying what map works with which devices. I would think part of your issue might just be the map doesn't have enough space on the sd card you are trying to load it to. I think the free space needs to be almost double the map size as it builds temporary files on the card during the install process. But that's more of a guess on my part. Under garmin's current map policy, I think it make more sense to buy the preloaded cards as you can move them around to any device that accepts the sd cards. Downloaded maps are locked to a specific device, but you can have multiple map types on the same card (by my understanding, not experience).

Altogether though, I've seen some really good deals on Garmin Montana's and Oregon's recently that include topo maps. So if you can return it, that might be a consideration.

The Dakota 10 doesn't have an SD card slot... It has 850 MB internal memory and the Topo US 100K is 3 GB, so that is never going to fit. The Garmin website says that the downloadable version is compatible with the Dakota 10, but that is simply wrong. The only viable option is the DVD version, because that one allows you to transfer just a part of the map.
BTW, temporary files are created on the hard disk of your computer, not on the SD card.

That's what I was afraid of. Hopefully they'll refund the map, even though it's non-refundable. If not, if they can de-register it from the Dakota I'll grab the Etrex 20 instead.

Well, after Garmin said they would send me the DVD maps 2nd day for the price of ground....they sent them ground. I bought this device hoping to use it on vacation next week and that will probably not be possible. I'm pretty disappointed in the way this has been handled and will probably look in to getting a refund on the entire mess. I have no idea how support is with the other manufacturers, but it certainly couldn't be worse.
  • I'm not sure why you're blaming Garmin ... wasn't it you who ordered the wrong item in the first place

Because...Garmin told me directly they were compatible.
  • Missed that ... Apologies.
