Newbie Bob here.

So I am doing my bird survey and need to find longitude and latitude, what system do you think is best. I am not too concerned about maps. I do not have a smartphone either!

  • If u only need Lat/Long a Etrex 10 will do just fine.

    Or the Foretrex 301.
Its a bit smaller/lighter than the Etrex, and has a strap, so you can wear it on your wrist or attach it to your bag etc.
  • The Foretrex 301 is smaller and lighter, but the eTrex 10 can store twice as much waypoints, a lot more track logs and has features the foretrex doesn't.
Oh, and it is a lot cheaper.
  • Any gps is going to give you lat long. So if that's all you want, then get the cheapest you can find used or otherwise. Maybe a friend has one they no longer use and will give you. BUT..... once you get it, is it likely that that's all you'll really want out of it? Like most you'll probably find you want more. So any money spent on a simple unit, might be wasted money, considering that for $350 to $500 US, you can get a unit that does quite a bit. One of your consideration might be are you more interested in a Auto, Trail, Fitness or Marine gps.

Yes, the Etrex 10 does have some better features. But the Foretrex is good enough for most things, plenty of waypoints etc.
I have a Foretrex 401 as well as several Etrex models. If I'm just going out for a walk, I'll usually take the Foretrex, as its much smaller to put in my pocket, or strap to my rucksack. Though if I'm actually using the GPS for navigation, then it is very useful to have something with mapping, ie Etrex 20 or similar.

The Foretrex 301 is a bit more expensive than the Etrex 10, but not much, maybe about $30 / £20.
