Just completed cycle - no map

Hi,

I just recently got a Garmin 510. I went for a cycle yesterday (very short) and when I got back to the laptop it was already loaded up and there was a map of where I was. Today I went out for a cycle and there is no map. How come ? Is there something I can do to display the map alongside the data ?

maybe I had the GPS off but I don't remember turning it off ?

Is there a way to find out if its a limitation of the device or something I did/didn't do - like GPS switched off ?
  • No map where? Garmin connect or your 510. If you didn't have a map on Garmin Connect, then yes suspect you may not have started the timer, which is also what starts your data recording. Does your timing, hr and other data show for that activity?
  • I have a few thoughts on what it could be, but they will take some more investigating:

Is the mode on your 510 set to Indoors Only?

Can you view the activity files on the device? If so, are the roughly the same size as activity files for a similar duration/distance?

Can you view the map of your activity on the 510? If so, the problem is in transmitting it to GC. I would re-try uploading the activity with a manual upload.

Can you upload the activity to another web site, e.g. strava.com? If so, does it display properly there?

[Low probability] How long was your ride today? I know that other Garmin devices start deleting coordinate data (starting from the oldest activity) when the device memory starts to fill up. If your ride was really long, maybe the device stared deleting coordinate data.

Let us know how you make out.

No map on Garmin Connect. I know the 510 doesn't do Maps unlike the 810.

I did want to see a map of where I cycled on connect.garmin.com when I plugged the 510 into my laptop. I think its supported but maybe I screwed up and forgot to switch on GPS.

I can only view one map (the one I cycled yesterday for a few minutes) on my 510. When I select the other two nothing comes up. And the one from yesterday its not really a map on the 510 - just a line with two points in it.

I can copy data from Garmin over to Strave ... the cycle today appeared the same as it appeared in garmin connect. I was trying to copy the cycle from yesterday but I'm still working on it.

My ride today was 60km, I hit the finish button about 6km instead of a lap time and ended up making two cycles out of it. I thought at one point that hitting the lap time (every placed I cycled through) might mess things up but I think thats unlikely now.

Im trying to upload to Strava to see what is ported over but I am having problems. I am using the following :

    http://www.copymysports.com/

It says success followed by the following qualifier:

Only activities that have GPS data can be copied to Strava, so for example indoor activities cannot be copied to Strava.

I thought maybe I had GPS switched off so if it was I would not be able to copy the cycle over. It did copy that one but the cycle from yesterday doesn't appear on Strava.

Well Strava is not really my concern. I was trying to get a Map of my cycle on Garmin. I wanted to analyse where I was on the map with speed/heart rate etc
  • Why are you using copymysports? Just use the garmin upload feature, at least till you get this issue resolved. It still sounds to me like you are not starting your timer or possibly are accidentally stopping the timer soon after you start your ride. The gps is always enabled at startup unless you specifically turn it off.... at least on my edge500.

Can you make some of your uploads to garmiin connect public and post the link here. If we can get a glimpse of what data you are getting then we might have a better shot of understanding the problem. Do you have any additional ant+ sensors, such as powertap or a gsc10?
  • Good questions, VOICERESPONSE. I'd just like to add that copymysports.com (formerly garminsync)is just now coming out of a prolonged outage period where no synchronization was happening. Only limited synchronization is working now. I second using the Upload facility in GC. It eliminates what could amount to a pretty problematic link in the chain.

here are the three cycles :

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/381564603
    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/381564542
    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/381135304

I wouldn't have posted the spin yesterday but it is the only cycle that has a map.

I did start the timer for the two cycles today (they are the same cycle but I hit the end cycle instead of lap). I am not sure if I did hit the start button yesterday and if not it would mean something like maps only work with your not racing ?

I may have just hit the gps while I was indoors and forgot to put it back on when I went out.

I still can't get my other two cycles on Strava ?

    http://www.strava.com/activities/85054866

I was just using copymysports as it was the only thing that came up on google that seemed to be relatively straightforward.
  • Thanks for the URLs for the activities. I exported the activities in .tcx and opened them in WordPad (it's all I have at my disposal at work) to view the XML. In the first two activities, there are no <Position> elements, meaning the GPS receiver in your Edge was disabled; in the last one, there are <Position> elements, which means that the GPS was enabled. The good news is that you seemingly accurately recorded all three rides entire rides. I can tell that you were outside because the device captured changes in elevation. IIRC, the Edge 510 has a barometric altimeter, which is enabled when the timer is running. The bad news is that since GPS receiver was disabled in the first two rides, there is no positional data to use in order to plot your route, just elevation. It was enabled in the third one, as evidenced with the presentation of a complete map.

As for uploading to Strava... I am uploading activities individually both in GC and Strava for the time being. Once copymysports' synchronization issues have been sorted, I will resume trusting that service. It worked rather well before and I'm sure that things will resume working well soon. All the best.

No worries. Thanks very much for taking a look at them for me. It sounds like I did switch off the GPS after all. I will be going for a cycle tomorrow and I will make sure that I have it switch on. I'll see what I come home with tomorrow.
