Garmin fenix

Hi,

I have a problem with the gps of my GARMIN FENIX. Sometimes, one point is totally out of the race and then the distance is completely wrong.

On a ultra trail of 120 kilometers, my garmin fenix registred 140 km. 2 more or 2 less is possible but not Twenty.

To understand the problem let's zoom on the following link (triathlon Gerardmer) http://connect.garmin.com/activity/373054112

Zoom on the lake per example and see what happen sometimes. It was, supposely , a straight line , i was not turning around in the water. ;):D

I changed manually on garmin connect the distance... the reason is quiet exact. ;-)

Thanks

Guillaume
  • depending on many factors, it's not to be unexpected that there may be some signal loss or aberration that causes it to momentarily think you are somewhere else. I would think they do, but I don't know it for fact, that all these devices try in their software, to 'look' for these discrepancies. But some do get through and show up.

If the fenix puts this in a .fit file, you can browse the web and find some editors to fix your data if this particular activity is important. The fitfilerepairtool being the most popular (but not free).

Do you get this in every activity? Terrain, atmospheric conditions and other radio interference can be a factor, as is the fact the antenna in the watch is tiny and might get obscured by something as simple as putting your hand in a bag of potato chip with mylar coating.

All that being said, most of the time they work very reliably.

Thank you mister for your answer. The first answer who's honest and professional :). .. more than the official technical support.

Actually, I have quiet often this problem but only on long distance OR if i cover the watch (per example in the water with my swimmingsuit).

Some days (on long distance) with the perfect atmospheric conditions, the problem can appear, for every activity. Sometimes more sometimes less.

The fitfilerepairtool is useless because I need to know the distance during the tracks...the fact I change the recording frecquence (each 1 second or each 1 minute) doesn't change nothing.

I hope the future software will resolve these aberration.

If you have any link (forum...) about this, let me know please

    Thanks
  • I wouldn't necessarily wait for new software. I might be your something physically wrong with your Fenix. I don't think you made the activity you linked 'public' so I can't view it to see if it's similar to what I was talking about.

One thing you mention though is that it happens when you cover your Fenix. Yeah that is probably an issue. Especially if in the water, you'll likely loose GPS signals. Maybe even the sleeve of a wet or sweat soaked shirt could be a problem. When I ride or walk the trails after a rain and I go through dense trees with lots of wet leaves, I have a much less accurate track of where I was.

I don't know how or when the Fenix records your track. The fitness devices such as the edge series only records your track when the timer is running. Other garmin device such as their marine gps's record the track anytime the device is on. You should determine if that's an issue.

The main thing you need to assess is whether this happens frequently in areas that should otherwise have good satellite reception. If it is, then you need to work with Garmin Support until they decide to replace it. They'll likely have you do all sorts of menial things that will be annoying, but follow through and they'll get you another as required by their warranty.

ok Thanks , my profile is now public.

Let's show you another problem I had in Spain last week.

Firts problem , I started an activity everything was ok. The gps started to count the kilometers and suddenly stop, only the kilometers, the ascent and descent continued. SO I left the ultratrack mode to start again the activity. Everything was ok until the end of the day. + - 42 kilometers further (I saw it on the screen, I stopped the gps. It saved the activity automatically. I went see the fit history >> 7,23 kilometers (and not 42 kilometers). So , Im frustrated to have "lost" all the lap, all averages and statistics.
lets see on this link http://connect.garmin.com/activity/399120164 . ASCENT 2500 M ascent+ (it's logical) but why this distance suddenly ???

NB > the right line on the map is because we took a car and I paused the activity.
