Nuvi 50LM Charging Problem

On the only 3 longish journeys I've made since getting the sat nav it not only runs out of charge very quickly but will not even work with the car charger. On Saturday I had a 150 miles journey to make but just when I reached the town and needed it most, the sat nav shut down apparantly out of charge. This despite the fact that it had been plugged into the car charger all the way. Couldn't get it to boot up and therefore spent almost an hout trying to find the address.
Two questions:
1 How long should the fully charged battery last, and;
2 how do I know if the car charger is working?
  • 1. Battery will last about 2 Hours, but whill navigating i think i will be empty in about 1 to 1.5 Hours
    2. If u plug in the charger there must be a small lightning blot in the battery icoon top right.
    3. If u plug out the charger, there is a pop-up on the nuvi warrnig u the ext power was lost.
  • Most nuvi batteries when new last a few hours, but that decreases as they get older.

    First check the 12v socket in the car is working. Do you have something else you can plug in?

    Otherwise I know on mine that when it's charging the battery icon disappears, but I'm not sure if that would be the same on your model? If it is you will see the battery icon disappear when you plug the cable into the 12v socket, assuming it's 'live' and your cable isn't faulty.
  • 2445/2495 and 2545/2595 there is a lightningbold in the Battery icoon the 50LM is from the same serie/year.
    the best way to check is unplug the charger, if the "Power is down" message appears, the charger works!
  • I think I would assume it is the power cable or what you call the 'car charger' is bad. But you do need to check the power point you plug into on your car didn't blow a fuse or something.

    Does it power up when you connect it to a pc. Howerver, if you have not ever had it connected to a pc, I think you'll have to install all the garmin usb drivers and such.
