I want a GPS with the following features for use in my Jeep. I don't need features like Lane Directions or Traffic Conditions designed for city driving. I don't mind having them if the GPS will work for Off-Road use.

o Ability to leave Tracks (“bread crumbs) as well as upload and download Tracks
o Ability to download detailed Topo Maps or “Customized Maps
o Ability to enter Waypoint by entering coordinates manually.
o Large memory or standard memory cards.
o Large, Color, easy readable screen.
o Easy to manipulate features while driving.
o Ability to attach to car’s 12v system for power.
o Both internal batteries and ability to use car’s 12v power. So can be used outside the vehicle too.
o Ability to use Routes and Automatic Routing.

Unfortunately Garmin's website doesn't indicate all the features and their User Manual is also not very helpful in determining available features.
  • I think there are probably a lot of Garmin and other manufacture's devices that fit that bill. You just won't find that for the low price world of nuvi's and other auto GPS's. Garmin's website lately does a poor job of letting you see the full use of each device. They focus too narrowly and use too much 'salesman speak' and don't give you a way to compare effectively.

I'm sure other Garmin devices might be better, however I think you could get a marine GPS and load Topo maps on it, then you'd have your 12 volt system by design and most of your other wish list.

But this forum is more about Garmin's fitness devices, so you might get a better response at http://forums.gpsreview.net/
