I have a All Europe SD card in my Oregon 450. In BaseCamp I can find and read detail of street names on my computer, but not on the device. Not much use if I can only use it at home!
Is the card a genuine Garmin one? I've heard that cards from eBay etc can be fake.
City Navigator Maps are locked (copy protected) so if your card is fake you won't see detailed maps but BaseCamp might.
Your description is rather vague. More detail would help.
Thanks for your response; it came with my Edge 800 so it is genuine. It is my intention to cycle the route of the River Rhine in 2014 and my first action is to create daily routes and save them to my device. To do that I need to be able to establish the start point in a town and go from there.
I'm still not sure exactly what the issue is. Can you see the maps at all? If they're showing but without much detail there may be a setting in your Edge 500 to show more.
