nuvi 3790 - route selection

Former Member

Hi,

Again I have searched but can't find the answer.

I have my preferences set to "fastest time" and I expect this to make maximum use of major roads. However I selected a destination recently and the route given took many short cuts along narrow country roads and was clearly a choice based on distance.

I changed the preferences to "shortest distance" and got exactly the same route.

I did the selection again on my desk a day later and got a completely different route but again not using the fastest route even though I changed the preferences around.

Picking the same destination on Google Maps gave me the main roads I would have chosen.

I can't seem to find any way to make the Garmin use the most effective route

Thanks

David
  • Sorry, maybe I misled you ... I realise there was no shortcutting on the Eastern route but was just confirming still no 'shortcuts' after I forced it to take the Western route by inserting one via :)

Incidentally the advice after any map or firmware update is to do a hard reset if your GPS is acting strangely of differently than before, that may be worth a try. Certainly from my tests I don't believe there's an issue with the map, it may be that the routing algorithms in a 3790 work differently, but the only way to confirm that would be to have someone with a 3790 check out the route.

As a matter of course I always check any long route on a map before I set off. Sometimes I alter the Garmin chosen route, but more often than not it's the way I would have gone.

I normally check before as well, this time I didn't :( I will make sure I'm totally up to date and I will do a hard reset. Two follow-up questions

    1) Is there a way to amend the route on the Garmin as you can by dragging on Google Maps or is the only way to put a waypoint in. I ask because it may be necessary to plan a route or select one when no map or Google is available.

    2) What would be your recommendations as to avoidances, trends etc knowing what you know now on my preferred routings?

    Thanks again

  • 1) No, you can't drag unfortunately :(

    2) I set mine up as Fastest with only unpaved roads checked as avoidances. I don't have myTrends etc but I understand routing is better with things like that turned off.

Ok, thanks again - at least as Clint Eastwood famously said "a man has to know his limitations" and now we do ;)

    Hi,
Just a quick follow-up - you suggested a "hard reset" after updating. All I can find in the manual is holding the on/off button for ten seconds. Is that it or am I missing something?

    Thanks
