Exactly how does (etrex 20/30) proximity alert behave?

I'm considering buying an etrex 20/30 but the manual has a very short description of the proximity alarm behaviour, which doesn't sound as though it behaves in the way I'd want it to. The support phone line guy didn't seem to know for sure either; they just read the manual description verbatim... but I thought I'd better ask, just to be sure:
- Does the proximity alert feature draw the associated alert centre point and zone/radius circle on the map view?
- Is the proximity alarm an audible beep only or is there some kind of visual indication too? I'd like to use this in a situation where I won't be able to hear a beep.
- If there's some visual indication, does it (or can it) switch from whatever view it's currently on to a map view to better show me where I am in relation to the zone?

Thanks in advance for any info.
  • I don't use it on my Etrex 20 but did experiment with it a year or so ago when I bought it. IIRC you just get a beep once you enter the zone. Don't believe it will act the way you want but others may know different.

My comments are general. I don't have an eTrex 20 or 30 but do have other models that do proximity waypoints.

Does the proximity alert feature draw the associated alert centre point and zone/radius circle on the map view?

    On my 76CSx no.

Is the proximity alarm an audible beep only or is there some kind of visual indication too?

On my 76CSx you get both visual and audible alerts. My 76CSx also alerts when leaving the area.
