Oregon 650 setting up tracks, losing track data

I am new to the GPS when it comes to hiking. I was on the trail yesterday and pulled the 650 from my pocket and started a fresh track. I wanted to track from the trail head to the peak and back. A few miles into my hike I removed the 650 from my pocket and it appeared to be off. I turned it back on using the power button but lost my track. I assume because it was off, the track was not saved and was stopped. I started a new track and put it back in my pocket. When I pulled it out again the unit was off and I lost my track. What am I doing wrong? I feel this is a simple fix but after searching I cannot find what it is I am doing wrong. Thanks in advance.

I looked for a setting to keep the unit on but obviously I have not found it.
  • I don't have this brand new unit, so from my past experience, it sounds like weak batteries. Also, some Garmin models, in the past, have had bad battery connection. Check on those. Finally, it may be a bug, not surprising, as Garmin trends to make the purchase of its just out models, rather an adventure. They do come up with fixes though.
