External power source for Oregon 450

I have recently bought a Powermonkey Extreme to provide an external power supply when away from mains charging. This works fine with my Edge 800, but not at all with my Oregon 450.

Garmin say that's it - tough .Could anyone offer a way around the problem?

Not sure what you mean? Is the Powermonkey Extreme not providing power or is your Oregon 450 going into mass-storage mode? If the latter configure it for Spanner mode.

Is it putting out 500mA at 5V just like a normal USB cable does? In theory, that should work.

Yes, it is putting out 500mA, but the Nimha batteries will not accept a charge. The Edge 800, with a lithium battery, is quickly charged. The powermonkey people have sent me an alternative connector tip, but to no avail.
Will look at spannermode, but do not want to damage anything

You cannot charge AA batteries via the USB interface. All that does is supply power to the unit (bypassing the batteries).

If you use AA rechargeable batteries you have to charge them in charger.
