Difference between "time," "moving time" and "elapsed time"?

Wondering if anybody can tell me the difference between "time," "moving time" and "elapsed time"? Those three items show up on the details for a workout, but I don't know the difference between them. Anybody have an explanation? Thanks.
  • "time" - The amount of time accumulated while the timer was running.

"moving time" - "time" minus the amount of time the device and/or GC calculations decide you must have been stopped. I've never seen a complete explanation of this, and I'm sure there are differences among devices, but this should give you an idea.

"elapsed time" - The amount of time accumulated from the time the timer was started until the last stop of the timer before the activity is uploaded or timer reset.

At least that's what I'm sticking with until someone comes along and corrects me!
  • From the FAQ on the Garmin website:

Garmin Connect processes the data of an activity in many ways to help you fully evaluate your activity data.

Below are the more in depth descriptions of various time and pace/speed fields:

Moving Time: includes only the time you were moving

Time: includes time moving and time not moving (if Auto Pause is off)

Elapsed Time: includes time between when timer is started, stopped, and reset (includes Auto Pause or manual stoppage of the timer)

Average Pace/Speed: Pace or Speed for entire duration of an activity

Moving Pace/Speed: Pace or Speed that only includes time spent moving (does not include Auto Pause)

Best Pace/Speed: Best Pace or Speed throughout the duration of an activity

Being aware of the differences between the various timing fields will assist you in utilizing them fully in evaluating your training.

Thanks for the responses. That makes sense . . . and, now that you point it out, seems pretty consistent with what i'm seeing on my activities. Much appreciated!!
  • Hi,

How do you select Moving Pace on a 810 edge?
There are many traffic lights on some of the courses and these affect the average speed.
  • I think I found it. select "Auto Pause" under activity profiles.

    I have a problem/question;
I run 2400m with NO stops.
I let the watch get GPS sych, wait 10 seconds then walk up to the start line and press [START] on my FR220 ( FW2.50).
I hit [stop] when i cross the finish line and walk for 8 to 10 seconds to compose my self.
I then select SAVE, then DONE.

It looks like the time it takes to STOP, SAVE and exit the Activity is being included in my RUN TIME and AVE PACE. ??

    Time: 10:11
    Moving Time: 10:07
    Elapsed Time: 10:11
    Avg Speed: 14.1 km/h
    Avg Moving Speed: 14.2 km/h
    Max Speed: 17.1 km/h
    Avg Pace: 4:15 min/km
    Avg Moving Pace: 4:13 min/km
  • ZUKJEFF, these are from GC? The time it takes you to save and exit the activity is not included. At least not by any devices I'm familiar with. Now if it takes you some time to catch your breath and remember to stop the timer, that is included.

These are how I understand Garmin Connect defines time, moving time and elapsed.

Time is the accumulated time while the timer is running.

Moving time is an attempt by garmin connect to add up all the time it thinks you where moving during the time the timer is running. The accuracy is subject to a lot of things like gps reception and other sensors that may work with your device. It's not perfect by any means so don't get bent by it.

Elapsed time is the time accumulated from the first timer start to the final timer stop before being reset or the activity uploaded. So if you stop the timer, then later restart it and continue the same activity the time during which the stopwatch wasn't running is included.

The others are obvious calculations based on the times you gave and the distances in the log file. I'm not sure exactly how those are derived, but it might be the accumulated distance between the gps trackpoints. I don't think the accumulated distance of the device is in the upload file, but I'm not sure.

The averages compared to your times show that they only used about 2393 meters for you average speed and about 2394 meters for your avg moving. The differences however are likely matters of decimal points used or dropped during calculation and possible the way GC may convert from one unit of measure to another.

Your avg pace looks correct based on your Time and Avg Speed.

I don't see where they are off enough to be of concern from the data you've given.

    Thanks VR,
No I do hit the Stop button when I cross the finish.
Ok, until I test further I'll put it down to math error.
But an average of 4:15/km and 4:18 is the difference between going under 90 min for a half and not :-/

    Thank you for clarifying!

My head has been aching after the strange inconsistencies between ''Time'' and ''Moving Time'' - but now it's not. I also understand now that ''Moving Time'' isn't perfect, and not to base absolute focus on this haha. Cheers.

And I have a problem with Moving Time Time & Elapsed Time
Today I run 8,31 km and my Moving time should be around 48:15 but when i downloaded it to GC Moving time is exactly the same as elapsed time
I paused my forerunner 305 few times on the red lights and GC shows that my pace was 6:18 but 305 tells me 5:48
    What can be wrong?
