Saving File as .tcx

Hey everyone,

today I did a big ride and accidently ended up creating two different workouts so I have exported the files from Garmin Connect as .tcx files and stitched them together in Microsoft Excel (For Mac). I'm confident I have done it right but my only issue is now I want to save the edited files back to manually upload to Garmin Connect but I can't figure out how to do it. Excel only wants to save as .txt or other formats.

How do I save the file as something I can upload to Garmin Connect?

Cheers,

Tom

    Hi Tom

I had the same issue today. I'm not sure if this is best/most efficient way to do it, but I exported a training run from the Garmin Training Center which automatically saved it as a .tcx file on my computer. I then opened that file, deleted the contents, and posted the HTML text or whatever you call it into that and then uploaded to Garmin Connect.

    Hope that helps

    Cheers

    Naomi
  • If you have a personal computer (pc) you can make use of the Fit File Repair Tool (http://fitfilerepairtool.info) to split, merge and edit activities in the .fit and .tcx file format.

Editing data in MS Excel is not very comfortable and and "total" and average values (distance, heart rate etc.) will be wrong after your manual changes. This is not the case with the Repair Tool: it automatically recalculates all average and max values after each change.

    All the best

  • Thanks for the replies guys, I managed to get it to work just by opening the file in text edit and doing it that way.

Mathikralli, I looked at that tool but I think you have to pay to use it for anything don't you? I appreciate your not going to give your stuff away for free (I wouldn't either) but didn't want to spend much money for what will probably be a single use.

I have the same problem. I have the data and have saved as text edit, but how do I save this to a format that the Garmin recognises please? Garmin Connect says it can't open the file

Well here's a link to some of the file schema or format http://developer.garmin.com/schemas/, but I think you'll quickly realize that manually creating data files is going to be a big piece of work. You can Google for tools to help you, but then you have to wonder if that free tool you downloaded is legit and not malicious.

Thanks. I was experimenting with route loops, which seems to generate all the information in a cue list, but I can't figure out how I can send this to the Garmin. I think it needs to be in a TCX format, but don't understand how to do this. I spoke to Garmin today and they say use Basecamp, but again I'm unsure how to do this. I am new to doing this stuff, so may be missing something obvious.

The link I gave you is for information you'd generally use only if you are developing some software to write .tcx files or possible are wanting to do some hacks to fix some issues in a course file.

If you just want to make a course to download to your device, then there are easier ways. Basecamp is one, but depending on what type device you have and what you want to do, there are likely better options. If you are biking, running or swimming, I'd recommend you get in the forum for your device, and read what they've been saying there. If you have a Garmin trail device, or auto device, then try looking through the forum at this link -> http://forums.gpsreview.net/ Ask questions if you need to, but it would be better to ask about courses in the forum more tailored to your device.

Will do. I'm sure it will turn out to be straightforward in the end. Thanks for your help.
