Forerunner 301 will not get signal from Heart Rate Monitor unless it's next to it.

My Forerunner 301 is having issues or my heart rate monitor is giving me issues. I can't tell which, but basically the Forerunner 301 will not read the heart rate signal unless it is right next or on top of the heart rate monitor. Take the 301 away an inch or more and the signal will drop and the heart rate (X) error message symbol shows up. Anyone got similar issues or can throw a bone my way? Pairing is not an issue, and the correct readout is not an issue (no spikes or erroneous hbpm). Here were my attempts to fix this:

New 2032 battery.
Re-scanning of the heart rate senor option on the 301's general setting.
Both the soft and hard reset multiple times.

Please help...

I have had the same issue and I think it has something to do with my smart phone Strava app causing interference....If I don't use the phone it works flawless.
