I'm about to receive the 4th Foretrex 401 unit. The other three have gone back due to firmware failures which mean the unit wouldn't get past the splash screen. I did have one unit which allowed me to perform a factory reset and erase all data (which didn't) which would allow the unit to work again, but that one had what looked like a core dump and wouldn't connect to a PC ever again.
My problems arise when I use Base Camp to put a track on the device. I personally believe it is in the dismounting of the unit from the PC (Win 7, all versions of base camp since late 2012) in order to prove this I'd like to understand how you put the tracks (.gpx files) directly onto the unit; i.e., plug it in and just treat it like an external USB drive on Windows explorer. I hope I can simply navigate to the appropriate folder and drop the .gpx file in there. When I dismount the unit from the PC I should then switch on the unit and (a) get past the spash screen and (b) be able to see the track. Does anybody know which folder and the path to get there? Does anybody else have this problem? Like I say, I've had three all with the same problem.
Alternatively does anybody use other software to put tracks on their Garmin? Especially the 401
Thanks,
Cheenis
