Oregon 450 now shows a few boot steps and then powers off - what to do?

I loaded a new GPX file into the GPX directory and removed all other GPX files in that directory except from 3 other GPX files I wanted to keep. Also I renamed the extension of one GPX file I didn't want to clutter the display, but still needed later.

That was a bad move - as the device now only shows the boot screen and a few of the booting steps and then blanks the display and seems to power off whenever I try to power it up.

I can do the "master reset" by holding a finger in the top left corner upon power-up. But it does not rectify the problem.

I can not access the device via USB any longer.

I have tried removing the SD card - no change in behavior.

I have switched batteries - no change in behavior.

Any ideas what to do?

(getting slightly into panic mode here as this GPS was supposed to be a significant part of the navigation for a 1000 km bike trip starting tomorrow :-/ )

Many thanks in advance :-)

You could try to force it to start in USB mass storage mode. Instructions from http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/Miscellaneous

Recovery #1 -- Forced USB Mass Storage Mode (only available in release 2.85 and after)

If your Oregon freezes during the startup process (i.e. Loading Maps...), and you've just loaded new maps or new gpx files then it could be the new files which are causing the problem. This procedure forces the unit into USB Mass Storage mode so that you can delete (or rename) these files. Follow these steps to recover:

    • Attach the Oregon to your computer via USB cable
    • The Oregon will power on and start to boot, immediately power the unit off while still connected
    • Power on the Oregon and continue to hold down the power button for 30 seconds
    • The Oregon should enter USB mass storage mode
    • From your computer remove or rename any gpx, map files (.img or .kmz) files that were recently added
    • Unplug the Oregon and power on to see if this remedies the problem

During step 3) you should only see the Garmin banner for 30 seconds followed immediately by the graphic that shows a computer connected to a GPS. If you see any other text such as your custom banner, banners for loading maps, waypoints, etc then you have not held down the power button long enough.

Thanks a ton Craig - you rock.

I had to do the "Recovery #2 -- Forced Upgrade using RGN file" method... but wouldn't have found that without your help.
