USB problems

My nuvi 1450 cycles on and off. I think the USB connection is bent.

I'm thinking of buying a new non OEM car charger. It's marketed for the 1450LMT. Will it work with my non LMT 1450? A few people report units going into data mode this non OEM chargers. Most people are happy. How to avoid going into data mode?

I'm also thinking of sending the unit which is more than a year old to sharcnet. The cost to fix the USB port is $35 plus shipping. The site gets good reviews posted on the site. Does anyone have independent experience? I can buy a reconditioned unit for $110. Is it better it to spend to perhaps fix the old unit and for the cable or to buy a reconditioned unit?
  • 1. Buy the Reconditioned unit
    2. Don't buy the OEM Car Charger, buy a Garmin Original
  • Even if it's out of warranty, call Garmin. Sometimes for seemingly no reason, they'll just send you a replacement unit at no cost. Even if they don't, Garmin's cost to replace or refurb your unit and get you a new cable might be competitive with your other options. Additionally, If you are in the U.S., Walmart and Bestbuy have a bunch of Nuvi's for around 100 dollars.

Isn't the charging cable on the 1450LMT also the antenna for the traffic? If it's charging only, I wouldn't be afraid of it not being Garmin.

You'd probably find more nuvi users familiar with your questions at this site http://forums.gpsreview.net/ Most of this site is people using Garmin's sport devices.
