Weird Garmin Plot

I did a walk recently with my Garmin 800 and got the attached track. Has anyone seen anything similar ? Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be ? All ideas gratefully received !

  • Poor satellite reception would be my guess. The little internal antennas on these devices can be affected by things you might not expect. I suppose if you had autopause on and walked slow enough, you might get something like this too.

I use an edge500 for biking, when I walk I put it in my shirt pocket and have had good luck with it. This was just a one time thing? Or has this happened more?

Hi. Many thanks for the response. I was guessing some sort of reception issue but it's never gone as crazy as that before and I have used it a fair bit for walking. I do walk pretty quickly - usually between 4 and 5 mph. I have noticed on occasions (both walking and cycling) that the Garmin track doesn't exactly follow the road and I've put that down to some inaccuracy due to factors like meteorological conditions. Do you happen to know where on the device the satellite sensor is situated ? Is it possible I've been obscuring it on occasions where I've walked with it in my hand ?
  • Don't know where the antenna is other than it's internal. I took on of my Garmin marine GPS's with me to use on a friends boat and had to rely on the internal antenna as his external antenna connection wouldn't work with my unit. One time while navigating we lost reception briefly. I happened to have my hand resting on the top of the unit at the time. When I took my hand away it resumed working. It's likely that there was a combination of things degrading the signal at that time, but I do feel having my hand resting on top was one of them.

I think your walk appears to be in fairly open areas, so if this happens more often then consider calling Garmin before your warranty expires.
