Problems with Routes, tracks and Dakota 20

Hello this is my first time on this forum posting but I have not been able to figure out how to solve my problem on my own.

I have a Dakota 20 which I use for hiking and cycling. I have used " Map my Ride " to make routes for cycling trips. I have been able to download them (transfer) to the Dakota 20 as a track, and have actually used it as a track. But a few days later I can not find it anywhere on the Dakota 20 and would need to transfer it again.

I have also tried to follow the directions as to converting the track to a route (in Base Camp), but when I do, I can not find it as a route on the Dakota. I do have an internal memory card, 4 and 8 GB, and have the same results with either card. I have the Garmin city maps installed as well.

If anyone could direct me in the right direction as to how to solve my problem, I would be grateful.

Thanks Tom
  • Both tracks and routes downloaded to your Dakota should appear in track manager/route planner. Are you looking there or somewhere else?

I have looked all over the Dakota 20, but yes have looked in the Track manager and Route Planner. When I first transfer a track to the GPS I can find it and use it, but after a few days later I can no longer find it (is that normal). I hope that is not normal as I plan to use the Dakota 20 for long distance cycling (over many days) without access to a laptop.

As for routes, I have an older car GPS and have been able to transfer the way-points and routes from it into the Dakota and I can find them in Route Planner, but I have not been able to find any of my routes which I have converted from tracks to routes and then transferred to the Dakota 20 (using Base Camp).

    Thanks Tom
  • Well it's certainly 'not normal' for routes/tracks to be there one minute and gone the next. Are you able to verify that they are there when you transfer them using by looking at the GPS/cards using Windows Explorer?

Also be aware that Basecamp may send the routes/tracks to your Dakota/card using the same name each time. so if you send one track then another the second may overwrite the first. I don't have a Dakota so unsure exactly how it behaves. But if it works like that it could be the cause of tracks apparently 'disappearing'.

    Thanks for your help.

Today when I turned on the Dakota 20, The only tracks on the unit were "auto" , I assume that they are generated when I use the GPS. The unit is fairly new as I have only had it about a month and I am trying to learn how to use all its functions and then be able to map all the cycle trails in my area (reason for auto tracking). All the previously transferred tracks were not visible. But on Friday I used a track for my local waterfront trail (which I had transferred to the GPS) which covered 3 different cities, but is no longer on my Dakota 20.

Now the routes, I just tried to transfer my 230klm cycle ride into the Dakota again, but it told me that it was already there (when plugged into the computer) but when it is unplugged, I can not find it on the Dakota 20. I have looked under almost all functions and things, but constantly look under Route planner.

    Thanks Again Tom
  • Have you tried looking in the GPX folder to see what's listed. Tracks and routes sent to your GPS if transferred correctly should appear in that folder.
